Remote sensing is a key method in bridging the gap between local observations and spatially comprehensive estimates of environmental variables. For such spatial or spatio-temporal predictions, machine learning algorithms have shown to be a promising tool to identify nonlinear patterns between locally measured and remotely sensed variables. While easy access to user-friendly machine learning libraries fosters their use in environmental sciences, the application of these methods is far from trivial. This holds especially true for spatio-temporal since its dependencies in space and time bear the risk of overfitting and considerable misinterpretation of the model performance.
In this introductory lecture I will introduce the idea of using machine-learning for the (remote sensing based) monitoring of the environment and how they can be applied in R via the caret package. In this context error assessment is a crucial topic and I will show the importance of "target-oriented" spatial cross-validation strategies when working with spatio-temporal data to avoid an overoptimistic view on model performances. As spatio-temporal machine-learning models are highly prone to overfitting caused by misleading predictor variables, I will introduce a forward feature selection method that works in conjunction with target-oriented cross-validation from the CAST package.
In summary this talk aims at showing how "basic" spatial machine-learning tasks can be performed in R, but also what needs to be considered for more complex spatio-temporal prediction tasks in order to produce scientifically valuable results. Based on this talk, we will go into a practical session on Tuesday, where machine-learning algorithms will be applied to two different spatial and spatio-temporal prediction tasks.

In this video, we’re going to talk about the American vowel sound /eɪ/, as in the word “make.”
You can also hear this sound in words like "take," "day," "wait" or "eight."
We’ll be using a special phonetic symbol - /eɪ/ - for this sound.

Let's do a quick test. Read this phrase aloud: "A snail takes a late train" Every word in this phrase has the /eɪ/ sound. If you’re not quite sure you made this sound correctly, keep watching.

OK. To pronounce the /eɪ/ vowel, you should focus on the correct position of your lips and tongue.
Partially open your mouth, spread your lips wide and make them tense.
Raise the middle of your tongue to the roof of your mouth and push it to the front. The tip of your tongue should be down, just behind your bottom front teeth.
Remember, the /eɪ/ is a tense sound, so your lips and your tongue should be very tense. Your jaw should be partially lowered.
Now, let's pronounce this sound: /eɪ/, /eɪ/, /eɪ/.

Now, let's practice this sound in some words.

So, when you hear the /eɪ/ sound, you can assume that it should be spelled with the letter 'a.'

'ai,' as in "wait,"
'ay,' as in "day,"
'ei,' as in "eight"
or 'ea,' as in "break."

Einstein's favorite place to play is on the counter in the kitchen where he can play with his toys and other "recyclable" items that are made bird safe for him to play with. He can be very bossy as he plays with a plastic fruit container, saying "Up!" to it several times. "Up" is the command used when by the owners when they want Einstein to step onto their hand. Obviously, this plastic fruit container is not cooperating! He continues to command it and when it refuses to step up, Einstein tells it to "Be sweet!"! This is also what the owner will often tell Einstein when he is not cooperating! Then Einstein says, "Here look!" As if he wants to show the fruit container something. On our August trip to Zambia, I was privileged to spend some time with Charles Sakala, a 13 year old orphan who lives at Breath of Heaven Children's Village. During this time, we did what I call "Fight Clubs" with him and some of his friends. A Fight Club is when 2 or 3 people get together to "fight for the Gospel" in each others's lives through confession of sin and bringing each other to the truth of the Gospel.

Here, you will hear how our Fight Club encouraged Charles to step out of fear and into a boldness to share the Gospel at a church service we went to in a remote village in Zambia, a very poor village with no electricity, running water, and very little food.
