Returning to the Bay Area, Parlour to Parlour comes full circle (though there is still one more special episode to come) with Steve Taylor. Just like Portland's Chris Robley, Steve is prone to busking, and actually does it quite frequently. And like Meredith Axelrod, Steve also plays music as his sole source of income. In fact, it was a chance run-in with Steve following a set by Meredith Axelrod at the Haight Ashbury Street Fair in San Francisco last June (Steve was busking by some port-a-potties with his piano) that reminded me - this dude has chops and soul, and featuring him here would be a real treat.

This performance of "Mystery" was filmed in Steve's basement practice space in Oakland, California.

Drawing on the writings of Avery Gordon, Saidiya Hartman, and César Sánchez Beras, this talk seeks to generate critical momentum around the premise that Classics is a ghostly matter, haunted by its participation in global projects of race-making but intent on denying or veiling its role in them. In heeding the call to resist “happy face Classics” (Rosa Andújar), Padilla Peralta argues for an explicitly foregrounded commitment to a reparative intellectual history of the discipline—one that owns up fully to the field’s past and contemporaneous investments in Euro-American settler-colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade.

About the Speaker
A Dominican by birth and New Yorker by upbringing, Dan-el Padilla Peralta graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 2006 with a degree in Classics and a certificate in the School of Public and International Affairs. He was awarded the Daniel M. Sachs Class of 1960 Graduating Scholarship to read for the M.Phil. in Greek and Roman History at Oxford (2008); and earned a PhD in Classics from Stanford (2014), with the generous support of the Stanford Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellowship. After a two-year postdoctoral term as Mellon Research Fellow and Lecturer in Classics at Columbia University's Society of Fellows, he joined the Classics Department at Princeton, where he is now an Associate Professor. He is affiliated with the Programs in Latino Studies and Latin American Studies and the University Center for Human Values.

Padilla Peralta is the author of Undocumented: "A Dominican Boy’s Odyssey from a Homeless Shelter to the Ivy League" (Penguin 2015) and "Divine Institutions: Religions and Community in the Middle Republic" (Princeton 2020); and he has co-edited "Rome, Empire of Plunder: The Dynamics of Cultural Appropriation" (Cambridge 2017). His current projects include a co-authored study of 338 BCE and the origins of Roman imperialism (under contract with Harvard), a co-edited volume on the long fourth century BCE (under review), and a co-authored book-length essay on race and ethnicity in the disciplinary identity of Classics. A staunch believer in the importance of public scholarship, he has written for and sits on the editorial board of the public-facing Classics journal Eidolon and has published pieces for "The Guardian," "Matter," "Vox," the "New York Times," and "Fabulist." His writing, teaching, and research are guided by a firm commitment to anti-racist principles.

Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake return in an all-star sequel to DreamWorks Animation’s 2016 musical hit: Trolls World Tour. In an adventure that will take them well beyond what they’ve known before, Poppy (Kendrick) and Branch (Timberlake) discover that they are but one of six different Troll tribes scattered over six different lands and devoted to six different kinds of music: Funk, Country, Techno, Classical, Pop and Rock. Their world is about to get a lot bigger and a whole lot louder.

A member of hard-rock royalty, Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom), aided by her father King Thrash (Ozzy Osbourne), wants to destroy all other kinds of music to let rock reign supreme. With the fate of the world at stake, Poppy and Branch, along with their friends — Biggie (James Corden), Chenille (Caroline Hjelt), Satin (Aino Jawo), Cooper (Ron Funches) and Guy Diamond (Kunal Nayyar) — set out to visit all the other lands to unify the Trolls in harmony against Barb, who’s looking to upstage them all.

Cast as members of the different musical tribes is one the largest, and most acclaimed, groups of musical talent ever assembled for an animated film. From the land of Funk are Mary J. Blige, George Clinton and Anderson .Paak. Representing Country is Kelly Clarkson as Delta Dawn, with Sam Rockwell as Hickory and Flula Borg as Dickory. J Balvin brings Reggaeton, while Ester Dean adds to the Pop tribe. Anthony Ramos brings the beat in Techno and Jamie Dornan covers smooth jazz. World-renowned conductor and violinist Gustavo Dudamel appears as Trollzart and Charlyne Yi as Pennywhistle from the land of Classical. And Kenan Thompson raps as a hip-hop newborn Troll named Tiny Diamond.

Trolls World Tour is directed by Walt Dohrn, who served as co-director on Trolls, and is produced by returning producer Gina Shay. The film is co-directed by David P. Smith and co-produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella, both of whom worked on the first Trolls. Trolls World Tour will also feature original music by Justin Timberlake, who earned an Oscar® nomination for his song for 2016’s Trolls, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!,” and a score by Theodore Shapiro (2016’s Ghostbusters, The Devil Wears Prada).

He Does These 7 Things If He Wants A Serious Relationship With You

What does a man want? Even more important: Do you know what he wants in a serious relationship with you?

Men are truly not that complicated.

When it comes to our needs in a relationship, we don't have a whole lot that you need to worry about.

But you do have to be sure that you're not trying to give him what YOU want - instead of what HE wants.

It's one of the most common mistakes people make. They tend to give other people what it is they themselves are looking for instead of what the other person really wants.

Men don't want exactly the same thing you do, or even at the same time. A lot of it overlaps, but you have to know how men think - and when they think it.

Some of the advice you've probably heard that men want:

Get to his heart through his stomach - cook for him

Satisfy him in the bedroom like no one else

Be a difficult bitch with him

Be nice to him and never ask for anything

The problem with this kind of advice is that there are small bits of Truth in them. The unfortunate part is that it's not explained so you're going to make a ton of mistakes trying to apply it.

Let’s jump into what men want in a serious relationship…

WANT #1: Safety First!
One of the most misunderstood needs men have is safety.

It's not physical safety he needs, it's emotional safety.

Men understand that they are not as well equipped for handling their emotions. They know that they don't have the same kind of emotional IQ that a woman does.

Women are better at relationships, while men are better at rising to the challenge and chasing/hunting you.

But he does understand it's at a very Primal level that he needs a woman that will keep him in a safe bubble for him to express and show his feelings. This requires you to be stronger and smarter as a woman.

How do you make a man feel safe?

Well it just so happens that I created a program to help women do this called The Connection Code. Because it takes a lot of understanding how men work to know how to do this right.

But briefly, the way you make him feel safe is to make sure he never feels like he's going to be insulted or shamed or put down by you for expressing any emotion.
Men grow up knowing that if they express emotions in front of another man who is not himself a mature and balanced person, he will probably be ridiculed. Possibly even BEATEN UP! (Women don't typically ever experience this.)

This feels horrible to a man, probably the worst thing he can experience.

If he's even suspects that you will react this way - negatively, you will never get him to connect with you.
He will simply use you for physical intimacy and move on to the woman who does show him safety.

One of the best ways to explain this is to give you an example of when he doesn't feel safe:

Listening.

A man needs to know he's going to be heard by you when he talks about his feelings or the difficult things he's experiencing.

Unfortunately, what many women do is to ruin this sense of safety when he's talking about his feelings. Very often she will not hear him out completely. She will also typically interrupt him to move him forward in the conversation faster.

She gets impatient when he's taking so long to explain himself, so she jumps in and tries to get there first. What this does is it feels like a disconnect - and he shuts down.

There is a pretty good chance you've experienced this in a relationship with a guy, especially in conversation.

Unfortunately, you may not have noticed when it happened. But I can tell you he sure noticed. And he went on guard and made a decision to be very careful about doing that ever again with you.

Of course you would have fixed this in the moment, but you probably didn't know what happened. This is why it's so important to understand how men connect.
