A magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska on Wednesday evening (July 28) triggering a tsunami warning.

Footage shows locals and tourists visiting in Valdez being evacuated after sirens sounded in the region and people were told to flee to higher ground.

Resident Joseph Pena, a Filipino working in the area on a summer job, says in the video: "This is the scariest thing that's happened to me while I've been living here.

"We’re just walking away from the tsunami. This is the first time we’ve walked this path and there’s still a long way to go."

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the "notable earthquake" hit 60 miles southeast of Chignik, Alaska at 10:15 pm local time.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a warning for the U.S. state of Hawaii and the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.
