Er zijn al zoveel middelen geprobeerd door de gemeente Rotterdam in de strijd tegen de alsmaar terugkerende blauwalg in de Kralingse Plas. En keer op keer lijkt het niet te werken, waardoor zwemmen opnieuw niet mogelijk is. Het nieuwste middel, dat nu onderzocht wordt is Phoslock. "Dat is een kleiachtig materiaal, waar fosfaten zich aan binden. Het kan een oplossing zijn en dat gaan we onderzoeken", zegt Brigitte Moratis van de gemeente Rotterdam. In Australië heeft het product al goede resultaten geboekt. Al jaren tobbenDe bestrijding van de blauwalg in de Kralingse Plas heeft al miljoenen euro's gekost. Zo werd al een keer een nieuwe zandlaag op de bodem gelegd en werd ook blondeermiddel uitgeprobeerd als wondermiddel. Allemaal zonder succes.Maar wat er ook geprobeerd wordt. De blauwgroene smurrie blijft terugkeren. In 2011 is vissen onmogelijk door de blauwalg. "Vissen is bijna onmogelijk omdat die algengroei zo enorm doorzet."Een jaar later vinden recreanten het te vies om het water in te gaan: "Ik vind het water gewoon niet schoon, het ruikt ook niet lekker, je ziet een vieze drab drijven."Watersporters geven in 2016 aan het water niet meer op te durven. "Met de kleinkinderen varen gaat niet door." In 2017 zien ondernemers hun klandizie teruglopen: "We noemen het erwtensoep en als ondernemer zakt je de moed in de schoenen. Je wilt heel graag dat het een keer wordt opgelost." ZwemverbodOok dit jaar teistert de blauwalg de Kralingse Plas. Zwemmers moeten weer uitwijken als er een zwemverbod ingevoerd wordt. "Het is zo jammer, het is zo mooi hier en ik zwem hier heel graag. Maar met blauwalg is het niet te doen", vertellen Astrid en Ilse die twee keer per week een duik in de Kralingse Plas nemen. Zodra de blauwalg opduikt, wijken de twee zwemmers uit naar de Zevenhuizerplas. Ze hebben al eens last gehad van de blauwalg. "Ik heb een keer een huidontsteking gehad", vertelt Ilse. "En ik een keer rode huid en pukkeltjes en wat het dan is,  weet je niet, maar dan gaan we gelijk weg", vult Astrid aan. UitwerpselenBlauwalg voedt zich graag met fosfaten afkomstig uit uitwerpselen. De gemeente Rotterdam gaat een ganzenpoepzuiger inzetten vanwege de vele ganzen die poepen op steigers. Tot teleurstelling van hondenbezitters mogen honden straks ook niet meer het water in. De gemeente wil het hondenstrand verplaatsen. Partijen in de gemeenteraad zetten hier vraagtekens bij. Een andere maatregel is het keren van de sluis zodat fosfaatrijk boezemwater straks niet meer in de plas kan stromen als bootjes door de sluis varen. Voor de belangrijkste maatregel, het inzetten van Phoslock, moet de gemeenteraad van Rotterdam nog wel toestemming geven.De zwemmers hopen dat gemeente en waterschap nu eindelijk eens de blauwalg de baas worden. "Dat hopen we heel erg, moet toch ook kunnen. Het zou heel fijn zijn", zeggen de twee zwemsters met bibberende stem van de kou als ze het water uitkomen.
