US-Präsident Joe Biden hat sich im Vorfeld einer geplanten Videokonferenz mit dem russischen Präsidenten Wladimir Putin zum Thema Ukraine-Krise mit den Staats- und Regierungschefs mehrerer europäischer Länder verständigt. Wie das US-Präsidialamt am Montag (Ortszeit) mitteilte, habe der Präsident in einem Telefongespräch mit Frankreichs Präsident Emmanuel Macron, der scheidenden Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel, Italiens Ministerpräsident Mario Draghi und Großbritanniens Premierminister Boris Johnson die gemeinsame Besorgnis über die russische Militäraufrüstung an den Grenzen der Ukraine und die zunehmend harsche Rhetorik Russlands erörtert. Dabei unterstrichen alle ihr Unterstützung für die Souveränität und territoriale Integrität der Ukraine und hätten Russland erneut aufgefordert, die Spannungen zu deeskalieren, so das Weiße Haus.
Biden will am Dienstag seinem russischen Kollegen per Videogespräch mit ernsthaften wirtschaftlichen Folgen im Falle eines Überfalls auf die Ukraine drohen. Die Regierung in Moskau fordert, die Nato müsse ihre Ost-Erweiterung stoppen. Russlands Nachbarland Ukraine strebt einen Beitritt zu dem westlichen Militärbündnis an, was Russland als das Überschreiten einer roten Linie bezeichnet. Ein Vertreter der US-Regierung sagte bei einer Unterrichtung von Journalisten im Vorfeld des Gesprächs der beiden Präsidenten, die USA hätten zusammen mit ihren europäischen Verbündeten eine scharfe Reaktion für den Fall einer Invasion erarbeitet. Einem Insider zufolge könnte es sich dabei auch um Sanktionen gegen Russlands größte Banken handeln. Eine weitere Option sei es, Russlands Fähigkeit, Rubel in Dollar und andere Währungen umzuwandeln, anzugreifen.
US-Außenminister Antony Blinken hat am Montag (Ortszeit) in einem Telefonat mit dem ukrainischen Präsidenten Wolodymyr Selenskyj noch einmal Washingtons Unterstützung für die Souveränität der Ukraine zugesagt. "Sie waren sich einig über die Notwendigkeit einer friedlichen, diplomatischen Lösung des Konflikts im Donbass und die vollständige Wiederherstellung der ukrainischen Souveränität über ihre international anerkannten Grenzen, einschließlich der Krim", teilte das US-Außenministerium mit.
Die Ukraine hatte vergangenen Freitag erneut vor der Gefahr eines Angriffs gewarnt. Russland habe mehr als 94.000 Soldaten an der gemeinsamen Grenze zusammengezogen und bereite sich möglicherweise auf eine großangelegte Militäroffensive Ende Januar vor, hatte Verteidigungsminister Oleksij Resnikow gesagt. Auch die Nato und die Europäische Union hatten zuletzt mehrfach die Befürchtung geäußert, dass Russlands Truppenkonzentration an der Grenze zur Ostukraine Vorbote einer offenen militärischen Konfrontation sein könnte. Russland wirft der Ukraine hingegen vor, selbst eine militärische Aufrüstung zu betreiben.

President Joe Biden hailed the late Sen. Bob Dole as a “giant of history” and a “patriot” during a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda where the body of the former senator is lying in state. Biden said Dole “belongs here, in this place, this temple to liberty and temple to possibility.” The president said of Dole, “He, too, was a giant of our history.”
President Joe Biden, a longtime friend of Dole , said the former Kansas Senator, presidential contender and World War II veteran, should have the final word as he read from his colleague of 25 years' own plea for the country to come together and find common ground.
“Truth of the matter is, as divided as we are, the only way forward for democracy is unity — consensus -- the only way,” Biden told those gathered. “We may follow his wisdom and his timeless truth and reach consensus on the basic fundamental principles we all agree on.”
The morning ceremony brought about 100 invited guests and congressional leaders as Dole's casket, draped with the American flag, as they all sat under the Capitol dome. Dole, who served nearly 36 years in Congress, died Sunday at the age of 98.
He was a leader known for his caustic wit. He shaped tax and foreign policy and worked to help the disabled, enshrining protections against discrimination in employment, education and public services in the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Dole won the Republican nomination in 1996, but was defeated when President Bill Clinton won a second term. He was also the 1976 GOP vice presidential candidate on the losing ticket with President Gerald Ford.
Throughout his political career, he carried the mark of war. Charging a German position in northern Italy in 1945, Dole was hit by a shell fragment that crushed two vertebrae and paralyzed his arms and legs. The young Army platoon leader spent three years recovering in a hospital and never regained use of his right hand.

The US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have signalled that talks will continue in an attempt to calm tensions over Ukraine.

Around 100,000 Russian troops are massed at the Ukrainian border and President Biden has repeatedly warned of "severe consequences" if Moscow launches military action.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss also reassured Ukraine in talks today that the UK supports its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
We spoke to Russia's Ambassador to the UK, Andrei Kelin, and began by asking what the 100,000 troops are doing near Ukraine's border.

Late Sen. Bob Dole was a "man of principle" and a "master of the Senate" through his career in politics that lasted through six U.S. presidents, said President Joe Biden during remarks at Dole's funeral service on Dec. 10 at the Washington National Cathedral.
“We disagreed but were never disagreeable. I found Bob to be a man of principle, pragmatism and enormous integrity,” said Biden who worked with the statesman for 25 years in the U.S. Senate.
Biden praised Dole’s courage for his support of civil and voting rights as well as the creation of the Martin Luther King Day holiday over the objection of some Democrats and fellow Republicans and Democrats.
“God what courage Bob Dole had,” Biden said, adding that Dole, himself known for political compromises as well as confrontation, was worried about the current state of American democracy.
“In his final days, Bob made it clear that he was deeply concerned about the threat to American democracy, not from foreign adversaries but to the division tearing us apart from within.”
Dole was honored Friday at Washington National Cathedral as top leaders from both parties gathered to display the kind of bipartisanship now rare in modern government, a tribute to the longtime Kansas senator’s ability to practice bare-knuckle politics without losing an overriding sense of civility.
Dole’s flag-draped casket was carried into the sanctuary by a military honor guard as the congregation stood and Dole’s wife, former North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole, and daughter, Robin, looked on. Joining top leaders of Congress at the invitation-only ceremony were former Vice President Mike Pence and actor Tom Hanks, as was Bill Clinton, who beat Dole to win reelection as president in 1996.
Dole's longtime friend, President Joe Biden, sat with first lady Jill Biden in the first pew. Dole's casket will later travel to the World War II Memorial on the National Mall for a public “celebration of life” featuring Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the U.S. Army Band.
Dole, who died Sunday at age 98, was wounded in the war, served nearly 36 years in Congress and was GOP Senate leader for more than a decade. In February, he announced he'd been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.
