Четверо из них обнаружили в пламени великие души, позволившие им стать богами: король Гвин, забравший душу света; ведьма Изалита, забравшая душу жизни; и Нито, забравший душу смерти. С силой, которую им даровали души, герои смогли бросить вызов драконам и отвоевать мир для смертных при помощи дракона Нагого Сита, предавшего своих сородичей — он был рождён инвалидом без чешуи, даровавшей драконам бессмертие и был одержим поиском способа исправить это. Не упомянутый выше четвёртый герой — хитрый карлик — нашёл в пламени особую, темную душу. Он не стал забирать её себе, вместо этого расколов её и положив тем самым начало расе людей, но лишив себя права на божественность, из-за чего его так легко забыли. Чтож, будем изучать мир, лор и гореть пуканом от хардкорности бытия...

Он встречает человека, который даёт ему ключ, после чего его убивают бандиты. Затем Эйдена преследуют зомби, он едва выживает, прежде чем его чуть не повесили за отсутствие биомаркера - устройства, показывающего прогрессирование инфекции. Его спасает Хакон, бывший ночной охотник, который поручает ему забрать биомаркер из больницы.

За две недели эпидемия распространилась на несколько штатов, и власти пошли на крайние меры, начав массовую эвакуацию из заражённых зон. Четыре главных героя не успели эвакуироваться с остальными и теперь пытаются найти другой путь к спасению, пробиваясь через орды заражённых людей. Игра состоит из четырнадцати кампаний, в которых участвует новая четвёрка Выживших, протекают в южной части США, игра начинается в городе Саванна и заканчивается в Новом Орлеане. В кооперативе мы, как выжившие, должны пробиваться через уровни, разделённые убежищами — хорошо укрытыми и укреплёнными помещениями, недосягаемыми для Заражённых любого типа (которые действуют как контрольные точки), с целью достижения спасательного транспорта в финале кампании.
