SIXTH WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST ON THE CROSS
"When he had received the drink, Jesus said, 'It is finished.' With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." (John 19:30)

Jesus' journey had begun in a simple stable in the City of David thirty some years before. Now it was finished.

What Did Jesus Come to Accomplish?
What was finished? What was this mission that was now finished? Why did Jesus come? Let's look at how Jesus defined his mission -- and later, how his apostles understood it. We read about his commission to "preach the Gospel to the poor" (Luke 4:18, 43), "to bring life" (John 10:10b), "to destroy the devil's work" (1 John 3:8b), "to bring fire upon the earth," (Luke 12:49), "to testify to the truth" (John 18:37). But each of these seems like a means or aspect of the ultimate purpose, to save us from our sins. Consider these purpose statement verses:

"Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29)

"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." (Luke 19:10)

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45)

"Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." (1 Timothy 1:15)

"But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins." (1 John 3:5)

The Cup and the Baptism
Jesus had a very clear view of what lay ahead of him. He used two metaphors: "To drink the cup," to partake fully of an event, and "to be baptized," to be immersed fully in the event.

"Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?" (Mark 10:38)

"But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed! (Luke 12:50)

"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." (Luke 22:42)

"Jesus commanded Peter, 'Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?'" (John 18:11)

The cross in all its horror -- and in its redemptive power to bear the sins of the world -- hung heavily on Jesus during his last days in the flesh. His struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane was the climax, the point at which he surrendered ultimately to the Father's will. And now the cup had been drunk, the baptism completed. It is finished.

It Is Finished!
Look again at the passage. It is remarkable in how it repeats one singular idea -- completion, fulfillment, finishing.

"Later, knowing that all was now completed (teleō), and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled (teleioō), Jesus said, "I am thirsty" ... When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished (teleō)." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." (John 19:28, 30)

These three words derive from the same Greek root, telos, which means "end" -- primarily a termination point, then by extension, the end to which all things relate, the aim, the purpose.53

"Completed / finished / accomplished" in verses 28 and 30 is the related verb teleō, "to complete an activity or process, bring to an end, finish, complete something." With regard to time, it means, "come to an end, be over."54 Moreover the tense of this verb is important to us -- perfect tense (tetelestai). In Greek the perfect tense signifies a past action, the effect of which continues into the present. It has been completed and is still complete. The effect of the tense in this verb is a sense of finality.

In the last couple of centuries scholars have found thousands of papyrus scraps with Greek writing on them. Many of these are mundane commercial documents in which we find this word. Moulton and Milligan pored over many of these receipts and contracts to better understand New Testament Greek. They observed that receipts are often introduced by the phrase tetelestai, usually written in an abbreviated manner indicating that the bill had been paid in full.55 The obligation has been completed. The debt has been paid off. Tetelestai -- it is finished.

A Cry of Victory
It is clear from Matthew and Mark that just before Jesus breathed his last, he "cried out again in a loud voice" (Matthew 27:50, cf. Mark 15:37). John gives us the content of this loud cry: "It is finished!"

Those who are defeated go out with a whimper, but the victor announces his victory loudly and broadly: "It is finished!" The victory shout of Jesus echoed across the small flat hilltop and to the world beyond. It is finished!

Stack Cup is a fast, action packed game that will keep you on your toes with cups circling the table. It is best with four or more players and 10 or more party cups with an ounce or two of any beverage. Two players will start the game by bouncing a ping pong ball into their own cup. If they get the ball on the first try then they can pass the cup to any player EXCEPT the one still attempting to bounce their ball in. If they bounce it in in two or more then they simply slide the cup and ball to the right. If the person immediately to your right is still attempting to bounce their ball and you catch up to them, then you stack your cup on theirs, the stack of cups moves on to the next player in line while the player that got stacked must drink from the center and continue playing.

Russia's prime minister dismisses the media scandal over alleged bribe-taking by FIFA officials as a smear campaign thought up to influence voting on the host country for the 2018 World Cup.

"I just spoke on the phone with FIFA's president Mr. Blatter. I told him that a Russian delegation will fly out to Zurich today to present Russia's application to host the 2018 World Cup. This delegation will be headed by First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Shuvalov. In this light, I'd like to say that lately we have been observing a regrettable campaign against members of the FIFA executive committee. They have been smeared and there were attempts to discredit them. I view this as dirty competition ahead of the vote on which country will host the World Cup. In relation to this, I'd like to say that FIFA is not just an organization that stages football games. It is a large international structure that has a very important social function. It is not a secret that this sport, probably the most popular one in the world, draws the young away from the streets. From drugs and alcohol. I think such methods of competition are absolutely intolerable. Naturally, I would like to go to Zurich myself to present our application personally but, under the current conditions, I believe I has better stay on the sidelines out of respect for FIFA members and the FIFA Executive Committee members so that they can make their own objective decision without any outside pressure. You'll be criticised for something you did (or didn't do) and probably by someone whose next idea or contribution will be his/her first.

Number 10. Can I have a kiss
Rock bottom for NFL legend Joe Namath came as so much of his life in football did: with a
national TV audience watching. It happened during an interview with ESPN’s Suzy Kolber
during a game between the New York Jets and New England Patriots on December 20, 2003,
when a clearly drunk Namath leaned in and told her, “I want to kiss you.” Kolber tried to steer
the interview back onto the game, but Namath added that he “couldn’t care less” about what was
going on out on the field. Namath, whose boozing and carousing ways were the stuff of legend
when he played for the Jets, suddenly was ridiculed, the interview becoming a meme-worthy
national story, an embarrassment for a then-60-year-old father of two. Just like on the field, Joe
turned the situation around after he felt ashamed for what he had done. In his book, he said that it
was a blessing in disguise for him because as he had embarrassed his friends and family, went on
to turn his life around never had a drink after that night. More power to this legend but this
moment will stay with the fans forever. even though Joe was embarrassed and didn’t even get the
kiss, there was a player who got the kiss from a reporter and everyone loved it. Wait till the end
to see that!

walked away — led many to believe the star quarterback was flirting with Andrews. It could

have been inadvertent, or it could have been Garoppolo shooting his shot. Either way, spectators,
as always, had plenty to say. But what Garoppolo didn’t know was that the veteran sportscaster
was married to former NHL player Jarret Stoll, who won two Stanley Cups with the Los Angeles
Kings. Tough luck, Jimmy. On another occasion, there was another moment of flirtation between
a reporter and Jimmy Garoppolo, but this time the roles were reversed. The grind never stops,
does it?

So today take some time for yourself, to let go of your stress and realise that humanity has always endured everything that has been thrown at us, that we are a strong species that live in an amazing world full of positive energy, love and life. Embrace it, accept it, and as you listen to this music let all your worries fade away.
