In which John Green teaches you about the Cold War, which was occasionally hot, but on average, it was just cool. In the sense of its temperature. It was by no means cool, man. After World War II, there were basically two big geopolitical powers left to divide up the world. And divide they did. The United States and the Soviet Union divvied up Europe in the aftermath of the war, and then proceeded to spend the next 45 years fighting over the rest of the world. It was the great ideological struggle, with the US on the side of capitalism and profit, and the USSR pushing Communism, so-called. While both sides presented themselves as the good guy in this situation, the COLD reality is that there are no good guys. Both parties to the Cold War engaged in forcible regime changes, built up vast nuclear arsenals, and basically got up to dirty tricks. If you had to pick a bad guy though, we would point out that the USSR had no intention of bringing Laika the Cosmonaut Dog home alive. That poor dog never had a shot.

What's the difference between Bill Clinton and Barack Obama's experiences with marijuana? We all "know" Clinton never inhaled, but according to a book scheduled to be released on June 19th, Obama inhaled a lot.

Barack Obama: The Story purportedly fills in some of the gaps in the life of one of the most controversial men to occupy the White House. Author David Maraniss has included photos that back up his case, taken during Obama's high school days in Hawaii and during his stay at Occidental College in Los Angeles.

Let's took a look at some of the claims of the book.

Obama was a member of the Choom gang in high school. In case you're not an expert in 1970's drug culture, choom is slang for "to smoke marijuana." Barry, as he was known at the time, popularized something called "roof hits." That's where a bunch of kids get in a car, light up, roll up the windows to keep in the pot smoke, and tilt their heads back to savor the last whiff of smoke.
 
On a related matter, the Choom gang had zero tolerance for wasting good "bud" smoke, as they called it. So, if you exhaled prematurely, you were penalized and missed the next round of the joint.

Nowadays, Obama is known for taking the initiative, like when he sends out troops without waiting for a declaration of war. Back then he didn't always wait for his turn either. He often grabbed the passing joint and yelled, "Intercepted." Members of his political party, excuse me, I mean gang, didn't seem to mind.

And let's not forget the so-called Annex Olympics at Haines Hall, of Occidental College. Some of the events included wrestling in underwear, boxing while drunk, tipping over the Coke machine and a two-man event — pot smoking from a three-foot bong. You may ask why was this a two-man event? Let's put it this way — someone had to follow the order, "Hey, Dude, light the bowl."

All these stories we've just mentioned come from David Maraniss' book. Are they true? Normally, we would like to give the other side the opportunity to respond, but we know Barack Obama does not like to talk about those years. Perhaps one of the most influential developments in Marxist thought coming from Germany in the last decades has been the emergence of value critique. Building on Marx's later economical works, value critics stress the importance of abolishing value (the abstract side of the commodity), pointing out problems in traditional Marxism's emphasis on the "dictatorship of the proletariat". The German value critical journal Krisis has famously attacked what they believed was a social democratic fetishization of labor in their 1999 Manifesto Against Labor. Such notions have drawn criticism from more "orthodox" Marxists who miss the role of the political in value critique and the possibility of immanent transformation through engaging the realities of capitalist societies. Did the later Marx abandon his political convictions that he expressed in the "Manifesto"? What about his later political writings, such as his "Critique of the Gotha Program" in which he outlines the different phases of early communism? Is Marxism a scientific project as claims from value critics indicate? Was Marx trying to develop of a "science of value" in his later works? What can value critique teach us after the defeat of the Left in 20th century? Did traditional Marxism necessarily have to lead to the defeat of the Left?
