Camille Bryen is a French painter, poet and engraver associated with Tachisme. After having debuted in the 1920's under the pseudonym Aristide, Bryen cosigns with Jean Arp, Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia the first "Dimensionist" manifesto, while being friends with several Surrealists, including Raoul Ubac. In 1948, along with Hans Hartung, Wols, Gérard Schneider and Georges Mathieu, exhibits in the first "Abstraction Lyrique" exhibition. After the 1950 book "Héréphile", he has decided to no longer write, painting until the end of his life. The "catalogue raisonné" of his works is published in 1975, two years before his death. In 2006, the exhibition "L'Envolée lyrique, Paris 1945-1956" features some of his paintings.
Camille Bryen is the artist's name of Camille Briand , born in Nantes onSeptember 17, 1907and died in Paris on8 May 1977, French poet, painter and engraver of the new School of Paris , belonging to the currents of lyrical abstraction and tachism .
In the years 1925-1927, Camille Briand is part of the bohemian Nantes, using the pseudonym "Aristide", no doubt in reference to his illustrious namesake , also of Nantes origin. It appears in particular on the cover of the Revue Nantaise in April 1927, portrayed by Henri Bouyer, with the comment: «Nantes type, Bohemian Aristide».
An episode in Nantes: the case of the Close
During this period, he was involved, as well as the magazine, in the "Close affair" 1 , a worldly scandal that the authorities finally succeeded in stifling. In January 1927, the big names of the company of Nantes participated in a social orgy in the castle of Close situated avenue of the same name , but the secret could not be preserved. In March, the socialist newspaper Le Travailleur de l'Ouest attacked (without giving names, although known) on the grounds of the hypocrisy of the ruling classes and extravagant expenditure (champagne) rather than that of l 'Immorality'. Parallel street songs are offered on the public street. Aristide is the author of one of these songs: Surprise-party 2, of which he sells the text for a franc on the Place de Nantes; but for lack of peddling license, "Mr. Briand Camille" is apprehended on March 24 and is the subject of a report. The Revue Nantes , which was created in 1925, is a vanguard and takes up the matter in its April issue, devoting three pages to it; she says that Aristide sold several thousand copies of his song. But the authorities, in this case the municipality, involve the police and withdraw the review of the sale.
Camille Bryen moved to Paris shortly afterwards. Attracted by the surrealists , he published in 1927 a first collection of poems, Opopanax then, in 1932 , Experiments , mixing poems, drawings and collages. In 1934, he presented his first solo exhibition and made his first Tachist painting in 1936 . Bryen co-wrote the "dimensionist manifesto" of Charles Sirato , among others Jean Arp , Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia . With Raoul Ubac, he places "objects in the most unexpected places", displays "poems and images on the walls". He is notably the author of the slogan "Defense to prohibit", placed in several places of Paris at that time, and which will be taken again in 1968 by the insurgents of Paris in the form "It is forbidden to prohibit".
In 1948 , he organized the first exhibition of " lyrical abstraction ", which included Hans Hartung , Wols , Gérard Schneider and Georges Mathieu . He then approached the engraving and, in 1949 , oil painting. In 1950 he published Héphile and then turned away from literature to devote himself entirely to painting and engraving.
Beginning in the 1950s , Bryen regularly presented personal exhibitions in France and abroad and participated in numerous shows, biennales, collective exhibitions. In his work, always free from allusion, the discrete fields of color, structured by fine sprays, create a poetic climate that ensures its originality.
In tribute to Bryen, a stamp reproducing one of his works, Precambrian , is issued by the French Post on September 14, 1987 (value of 5 F).
Bryen is one of the painters gathered for the exhibition "L'envolée lyrique, Paris 1945-1956" presented at the Luxembourg Museum in 2006.
